I was introduced to grayscale markers last year and I can’t rave enough about them. They are more satisfying to draw with than pencil in my opinion due to how smoothly they flow and how quickly you can draw with them. It feels like painting more than drawing and seems like an ideal way to plan a painting.
Wow Kirti, that leaf is outstanding. I do have the grayscale markers but I haven’t use them at all. After seeing your leaf study I am inspired to use them now. I just found them again because I had to clean up the studio for company. I’m so glad I’m following you because this is exactly what I was hoping for when I started following people on WordPress was to become inspired. Once I do a grey scale study that I am happy with I will post it on my blog and link it back to you as the inspiration.
Keep painting. Oh and my paintings have stalled right now because I am trying to up my realism skills and this one painting is stalled. I keep trying to get the effect I want of crisp highlights but it just looks wrong. Maybe the grey scale markers will help. It has to after seeing your leaf, I bet that will be the key.
Lisa, thank you so much for the kind words! At first, I didn’t do so well with the grayscale markers, but I’ve since figured out how to use them. What works for me is to start with the lightest color and move up and add darker shading based on what I see. Also I “cheat” a bit by taking a photo and converting it to black and white so I can get a better idea of how to draw the object. I am kind of lazy with sketching because I want to paint, so thank you for your comment…it also inspires me to sketch more , which I know will make the paintings better. 🙂
