16″ x 20″, oil on canvas

I think I’m going to start painting on bigger canvases for certain subjects.  It was a bit of torture painting all these objects on a 16″ x 20″ canvas …felt like I was painting in miniature.

  1. I would look first at my composition; orchids are beautiful but I want to see the flowers and leaves up close. The actual flesh of the flower has prisms of color in it. At least my white ones do. There is so much moisture in them.
I have a reference file for still lives and I constantly look up artists I admire and ask “why is this painting so interesting? “. “Why did I fall in love with it? What makes it special over all the other paintings?” Good luck

    1. Thank you for the tip! The flowers were so small, as was everything else, that it was very hard to do much with them! I think with the size canvases I’ve been working with, it would have been better to zoom in on the flowers more. I’m wanting to go bigger though so I can capture the whole scene and all the interesting objects. 🙂
